What We Learned
Caregiving rarely begins with a decision.
It may begin with a diagnosis, a fall, a phone call, or a gradual realization that someone you love needs more help. Recognizing and claiming the role of caregiver can be an important first step toward finding support, resources, respite programs, and community.
Preparedness is a form of love.
Emergency readiness does not have to happen all at once. A simple tote, a family conversation, medications, water, shelf-stable food, flashlights, important documents, and comfort items can be gathered a little at a time.
The caregiver is part of the care plan.
Rest, health, boundaries, and personal well-being are not luxuries. They are part of sustaining the ability to care for someone else. The goal is not to accomplish everything at once—but to identify the next right step.
Building Preparedness Into Caregiving
During the Prepared Caregiver Corner™, Sharron Williams shared practical guidance for helping caregivers and families begin preparing before an emergency happens.
The conversation emphasized that preparedness can start small: gather essential supplies, identify medications and important documents, make a family plan, and continue building your emergency kit over time.
